The Secret Behind A Capsule Wardrobe

The Secret Behind A Capsule Wardrobe

With Summer comes many exciting events, but it also means an influx of travel. I have seen first hand how the stress of packing can really get the best of us and cause us to spiral, resulting in packing everything but the kitchen sink.

We've all heard of them before... capsule wardrobes. What does it really mean? How can you actually achieve it? Let me give you my top tips on designing a capsule wardrobe! Whether it's for your next vacation, or using it to build your own wardrobe, a capsule wardrobe promotes versatility allowing you to create many looks with the same pieces.

Here are a few tips to creating a capsule wardrobe for yourself that will keep your looks fresh:

1. Utilize the 3/3/3 rule. 3 tops, 3 bottoms, 3 layers, 3 dresses and 3 pairs of shoes. You can swap the dresses for jumpsuits if you prefer, or omit them all together if dresses aren't your jam.

2. Consider your activities. If you're using this capsule wardrobe for a trip, pack dresses that can be used for day or night. Choose layers that function for the climate you're going to. This wardrobe needs to support your functions as well as being versatile.

3. Pack in one color scheme. If you need a specific pair of shoes for a garment and you don't plan on wearing them with any other look, that garment is not a smart add to your capsule. By choosing one color scheme you are able to pack shoes and a handbag that go with everything. A capsule has no room for orphans. An orphan is that one item that only pairs with that one other item.

4. Load up on accessories. Accessories are the easiest way to change up your look and don't take up much space in a suitcase. It's amazing how a statement necklace can transform a simple look.

5. Wear your items for evening first. If you plan on re-wearing a garment, wear it to dinner where you're less likely to soil or sweat in it. Pull it out again later in the week for a daytime look.

6. Get over re-wearing things. IT'LL BE OK. No one will know, and if they do, who cares. Stuffing a suitcase to the brim, overweight fees, or even checked baggage and fees are annoying.  A capsule wardrobe will help you to pack with intention and leave room for the cool treasures you find on your trip.

7. Start with one item or look and build from there. Maybe pick a top you love and style the outfit with a bottom that will work for your trip. Next, find another top that will also work with those bottoms. Then choose a layer that coordinates... It can seem daunting to design a whole capsule, but if you take it step by step, piece by piece you can do it!
