Your Next Special Event Look Inside
Summer is event season and I'm seeing more and more clients get invited to events beyond your typical backyard bash. Personally, I love when an invitation says 'Black Tie Optional' or even better, 'Black Tie'.
There's something quite refreshing about a 'dressed to the nines' dress code. It leaves no stone unturned and no questionable doubt. Dress codes like 'smart casual' or 'summer chic' leave so much to the imagination. While I love the creative freedom it allows for, there is also something calming about knowing without a doubt what a dress code really means.
I am seeing more and more weddings with a formal dress code and I respect a bride for wanting her guests to rise to the occasion on her special day. For guests who don't normally attend fancy functions, I can also understand how many of you might not want to purchase a gown for fear it will go unworn after the event. And in case you're wondering, yes, black tie does equal a long gown. I just don't think a cocktail dress is suitable in this case.
When choosing a dress, be it for a black tie affair or something a bit more casual, it's always a good idea to think how and when you can wear a garment again. If purchasing a gown, can you get it tailored to be cocktail length? Think about what other events you have on the calendar where the dress might be suitable for. Just because others are in cocktail dresses doesn't mean you couldn't wear a long dress.
I think another reason as to why people might feel like they won't wear a gown again is because of this fear of being overdressed. I hear this all the time and in my opinion, there just is no such thing. Overdressed should be replaced with 'more dressed' and it is a situation where you are dressed in a way that is more polished and put together than your peers.
Remind me why that is a bad thing???
There is also inappropriately dressed. Times like these are where you might wear a gown to a BBQ or sweats to work... inappropriate.
You have the power to determine the level of dress you want to bring to your everyday life. If you find yourself stressed about being 'overdressed' ask yourself where that fear comes from. Are you afraid people will love your look so much and give compliments? Are you afraid people will notice you because you look amazing? Are you afraid that others will feel self conscious because they didn't put in as much effort? Dress for you and how you want to feel!
