How to Stay Chic in the Summer

How to Stay Chic in the Summer

As the summer temps soar, opting for natural fibers, specifically linen, can help to keep you chic and cool. Linen, with its timeless elegance and natural allure, is loved for its breathability, durability, and classic appeal.

The beauty of linen lies in its unique properties. Made from the fibers of the flax plant, linen is exceptional for breathability, making it an ideal choice for warm weather wear. Its natural texture adds depth and visual interest to outfits, giving them a relaxed yet sophisticated vibe. Linen also ages beautifully, softening over time while retaining its shape and structure, making it a sustainable choice for women of all lifestyles, ages and body types.

Proper care is essential to maintain the beauty and longevity of linen garments. Here are some tips for caring for linen:

1. Gentle Washing: Always hand wash or machine wash linen garments on a gentle cycle using cold water. Avoid hot water, as it can cause shrinkage and damage the fabric.

2. Mild Detergent: Use a mild detergent formulated for delicate fabrics to clean linen gently. Harsh chemicals can weaken the fibers and affect the fabric's texture.

3. Avoid Bleach: Never use bleach on linen, as it can discolor the fabric and weaken the fibers. Opt for oxygen-based or enzyme-based stain removers for stubborn stains.

4. Air Dry: Hang linen garments to air dry rather than using a dryer. The heat from the dryer can cause shrinkage and wrinkles. To minimize wrinkles, gently reshape the garment smoothing it out while it's damp and hang it to dry.

5. Ironing: If necessary, iron linen garments while they're still slightly damp using a medium to high setting or use a garment steamer to remove wrinkles without flattening the fabric. If you’ve still got some stubborn wrinkles, I like to steam the garment from the inside. I’ve linked my favorite steamers here.

6. Storage: Store linen garments in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent yellowing and discoloration. Avoid hanging linen in plastic garment bags, as they can trap moisture and promote mildew growth.

Dry cleaning is also an option for your linens.

When it comes to fit, linen is designed to just graze over your body. It shouldn’t be super tight. The fibers also have natural give to them, so know that your garment will stretch out a bit with wear.

A common complaint I hear about linen is all of the wrinkles it makes after it’s on for only a few minutes. If wearing linen, wrinkles are something to embrace! I’ve found that linen pants that are lined tend to wrinkle less, but the trade off is that are also less breathable.
