How to Wear a T-Shirt to the Office
When it comes to getting dressed for work, the modern woman’s workwear extends beyond the standard button down blouse. While I do love a good silk blouse, it’s not always practical for a lot of lifestyles. With many workplaces adopting a more casual dress code, the options for women are much more expansive. Previously, women would have never considered wearing a t-shirt to work, but today, it can look polished and put together. Personally, I love a white tee for its versatility, but it isn’t enough to throw on a tee for your next day in the office. This week we're exploring the white tee for the office and beyond.
The white t-shirt became popular in the 20th century, especially after being worn by icons like Marlon Brando and James Dean in movies. Women's white t-shirts gained popularity as casual wear in the 1960s and 70s. White t-shirts are typically made from cotton or a cotton blend, providing comfort and breathability. If you're looking for your tee to be more fitted, you might want to choose one with some added spandex for stretch and durability. I avoid linen blend t-shirts as I find they don’t hold their shape well.
You’ll find that tees come in various styles, such as crew neck, v-neck, and scoop neck, with options for fitted or loose silhouettes. The v-neck is universally the most flattering cut, as it can give the appearance of a taller, leaner silhouette. For women with a large bust, the v-neck also cuts into the chest depth, minimizing the bust.
The white t-shirt is a wardrobe essential because it can form the base of numerous outfits, from minimalist looks to layered styles. Here are a few tips for those wanting to wear a white tee to the office:
1. Make sure your tee is perfect. It should fit perfectly-not be too tight- shouldn't be see through, should be free of stains and wrinkles. If you plan on wearing such a casual piece to the office, it needs to stand up to being elevated.
2. Iron or steam your tee. While I think this is important with every piece you wear, it is especially important to ensure you don't look like you're wearing pajamas.
3. Accessorize. Make sure you are styling your look with jewelry and a belt to pull it all together. You need to compensate for the casual nature of your top and elevate everything else.
4. Elevate your look. Make sure to choose polished pieces to balance out the casual base layer. Pieces like blazers, dark wash denim, suiting, and leather heels will help to bring polish to your basic tee.
5. Tuck it in. A tee can come off sloppy really quickly. Tucking it into your trousers will help to give it shape and will look more put together.
