A Transition Period

A Transition Period

If I think about any major life change, there is a transition period. Right? Like if I think about when I moved to NJ- I didn’t know anyone, didn’t have any friends of my own, and I certainly never knew where I was. But then eventually after ups and downs, I figured it out. I made some friends, settled into my new job, and quickly found myself less reliant on my GPS.

Seasons are kind of the same. Just as you are navigating what the new season entails, mother nature goes and surprises you with a 90 degree day in September. Or she slaps you hard with a snowstorm at the end of March after a nice pleasant few days at 60.

But when it comes to your style, my advice to you, ease into it. It doesn’t have to be so black and white… in with the chunky sweaters out with the floral sundresses. No, when it comes to your style and transitioning into the next season, I say mix it up… and here’s how.

Transitional styling is incorporating your pieces from the previous season into the current season. In order to successfully do so, here is my one and only tip for you:

Pair one past season item with all items from current season.

What does that mean exactly? That means if you are styling a summer top, pair it with denim, boots and/or a leather jacket. So in this outfit, all items other than the top are pieces that are typical fall pieces. The purpose of this is to have the summer item compliment your fall look. In this example, if you were to wear sandals, the outfit would look as if it were out of season. I love white denim all year round, and its what you pair them with that dictates the season you are in. Pair them with a floral top and sandals, you have yourself a summer date night look. Pair them with a chunky sweater and boots and you are ready for a pumpkin spice latte.

Taking advantage of transitional styling does two things for you:

  1. It extends your seasonal wardrobe. This gives you more bang for your buck- you all know I love making something multifunctional to get the most out of your clothes.

  2. It forces you to get creative and reinvent your wardrobe. Items that have been strictly summer, now have a new place in your fall wardrobe.

I thought it would be fun this week to style a few of my favorite summer pieces and show you the ‘Now and Later’ versions of them! Now = summer, Then = fall. Follow along this week on IG stories and in my NEW private FB group where I’ll be demonstrating examples of transitional styling!
