I Get So Emotional

I Get So Emotional

I would like to redirect all of you to read that title again, this time in a Whitney Houston singing voice. Much better right? My inspiration for today’s post came to me the other day when I was in the car and heard a Kings of Leon song. I was immediately teleported back into… 2009? I think that was the year. I then just started on a trip down memory lane thinking about how much music really can burn a feeling and an event into your brain. Like I can still remember in college dancing with my girlfriend Jenna to Nina Sky ‘Oye Mi Canto’ and honestly, I just put it on YouTube and a smile came to my face instantly.

Ok, so what’s the point here?

Like music, clothing can stir up emotions. Those emotions cause us to cling onto items that we wouldn’t otherwise keep. I have a very photographic memory, so I can go through my closet and remember where I wore most things, but in general, I think most people can remember the really significant events in their life and what they wore. This isn’t me suggesting you go and toss all those items that have a special meaning to you, but as we gear up for Spring, your closet should get a cleaning too. Here are some ideas on how to break up with some of your most loved pieces of clothing.

  1. Try it on. Does it still give you those warm and fuzzy feelings it once did? If so, who am I to say to get rid of it, even if you’re not still wearing it.

  2. Reinvent it. Years ago, when a girlfriend of mine got her wedding dress tailored into a Christening gown, I remember gasping. At the time I had just been married and couldn’t bear to cut up my gown. But now, 4 kids later, she has these beautiful pictures to look at and even greater memories with her wedding gown. The options are infinite- turn an old sweater into a pillow, shirts into a quilt, even artwork! An old boss of mine was in the process of framing a vintage Hermes scarf- what a great idea!

  3. Donate. There are SO MANY great causes out there looking for gently worn items for women either to help them get a job (work wear), or for young women trying to go to prom (formal dresses) or even victims of fire (everything!). You don’t have to look hard to find someone in need, and I can’t begin to tell you how good it feels to help someone. I have found a great group in my community on Facebook where people donate items they want to give away and can also post items they need for whatever reason; financial limitations, loss, tragedy. If your item brought you so much joy, image what it would do for another.

Need help with that spring cleaning? Check out my Closet Audit service! Every client I’ve had has agreed that this is an amazing service and everyone wishes they did it sooner! Imagine being able to walk into your closet, close your eyes and choose an outfit all while knowing that whatever you pick you are going to feel amazing in. Just imagine that.

xo, Ashley
