'Would Be Cute if I Were Thinner'
Did that title catch your attention? Bet so.
I was online shopping the other day and was reading reviews when I came across a review title that said just that, ‘Would be cute if I were thinner’. She was a new mom and was leaving a review to say that the bathing suit she had ordered would be cute if she had lost all of her baby weight and basically it just didn’t work on her ‘mom bod’.
This review killed me. Literally, a part of me died inside when I read her review. I FELT for her. She put it all out there for the world to see (picture included!). I wanted to respond to her review and let her know it wasn’t HER, it was the SUIT. This particular one piece was a halter style and was white with blue HORIZONTAL stripes. It wasn’t made for stomach cinching and the style was not flattering for someone with her shape. I so badly wanted to let her know that it wasn’t her fault or her body’s fault, she, like a lot of women, just doesn’t know how to dress HER body. She probably saw a size 2 influencer wearing this particular bathing suit and immediately hit add to cart not thinking if it would actually look good on her. Often we as women are drawn to what makes us feel warm and fuzzy inside without being objective about a garment to determine if it is right for our body. We see something hanging in a window and are drawn to it because maybe you love the color, or maybe you saw someone else wearing a similar item and you are motivated to give it a go. The majority of women don’t really know what styles flatter them so each shopping outing seems like a game of trial and error and when it ends in error, we all know how that feels.
I also felt for this woman because I truly believe that no woman should have to change her body in order to look good in clothes. I understand her want to get her pre-baby body back and I understand any woman’s want to lose weight in order to be healthier and have more energy. But to think that you HAVE to lose weight to feel good in your clothes is false and just isn’t the case.
Here’s the truth. When you dress your body in the right styles, fits and fabrics you naturally look thinner. With the right clothes you can look like you lost that nagging 10 pounds. That my friends is a fact. When you know how to dress and play up your assets, the things you don’t love so much fall to the wayside. So how do you dress in the right styles?? That can be certainly challenging for some people, but working with a wardrobe professional is one way to know you get it right each time. When I shop for my clients I keep so many things about them in mind, but whether something will fit and flatter them is first on the list. Here are a few things I can suggest:
If you are following influencers, find some that are similar body shapes to you. If you’re one who shops from influencers, having someone who looks similar to you will help to set you up for success when you ‘swipe up’.
Take notice of what it is you like about the clothes you love. Try on that outfit that you always get compliments in… what is it about it that you think makes you radiate? Is it the color? The neckline? Try to find commonalities in the things that flatter you.
Get rid of stuff that doesn’t serve you! If you don’t feel great in an item, don’t even think twice about it. You don’t need that negative energy in your closet.
If you are you having trouble finding the right styles for your shape or are you continually let down when you try new clothes on, or worse yet, have you given up on shopping all together? Please don’t give up, its not you, its the clothes and that is something we can certainly fix! Contact me here and I can help!
