Accessorize Like a Bo$$

Accessorize Like a Bo$$

You say you want to look more put together, and then you also say you don’t like to accessorize. My friends, accessorizes are essential to getting dressed and completing a look! Sometimes a client will tell me, I just want to focus my budget on clothes, not accessories and that gets a hard ‘NO’ from me. I am constantly buying new accessories to change up my look and do the same with my clients. I have compiled a list of tips to help you accessorize like a bo$$.

  1. My first tip, check the sale rack. Accessories don’t change much season over season so I like to scoop them up when I can find them for a steal. Unless you’re wearing a seasonal statement piece, you can typically wear accessories year round. Accumulating a collection to choose from will create depth in your wardrobe and will allow you to continually change up that basic denim and T shirt look keeping it fresh.

  2. Mix high and low. No one said you can’t wear costume and fine jewelry. In fact, mixing the two will make your costume jewelry look more expensive.

  3. When layering, start with the piece you really want to wear first. I love layered necklaces, but it can be overwhelming to figure out which pieces to mix. Start with the piece you want to showcase, maybe its a personal piece like your child’s initials. Then try other necklaces you have making sure to vary lengths, thickness and textures but only slightly. You don’t want a big chunky chain with a thin one on top.

  4. More is more when it comes to rings. I love a hand full of rings, especially mixing chunky statement ones and thin bands. If you’ve seen me this year you’ve seen me rocking two pretty large jeweled Native American rings that were passed down to me from my Dad and Grandmother. I like to wear them on the same hand, sometimes with another ring in the middle.

  5. Mix it up. Don’t be afraid to mix metals or even metals and beads. If you’re mixing metals, layer a few gold with one silver, not the other way around as its harsh on the eyes. Mixing metal jewelry with beaded jewelry gives off a more casual, laidback vibe.

  6. Consider your outfit and let that dictate what you need. If you have a look with a strong collar or a detailed neckline, skip the necklace and opt for a statement earring. If your outfit is on the simpler side, wear statement jewelry or belt. Make sure all your accessories (jewelry, belt, hat) aren’t competing for attention.

  7. Don’t wear multiple statement pieces. In general, if its a statement necklace, go with studs. If you’re wearing a statement earring, skip the necklace or just a simple dainty chain. The same goes for hair accessories. If you’re wearing a statement hair clip or headband, opt for stud earrings. Sometimes I like to squint at my reflection to see what pops out. If there are multiple things, take one off.

  8. Accessorize even with athleisure. I suggest a simple chain necklace, studs and maybe even a hat. This keeps your look still put together, not gym ready.

  9. Accessories go beyond jewelry. Play with hats, belts, sunglasses and scarves.

  10. Have fun! Its not that serious! Just try things on, you’ll know when you get it right.
