The Quick Fix
Why do we continually fall for the quick fix when deep down, we know that to get real results you have to put the work in? I often say to my clients, your wardrobe wasn’t built in a day, we aren’t going to magically transform it in a day. Yes, we’ll get there, but its going to take a little time. On that same note, if you’re looking to really improve your wardrobe and show up in style, its going to take some work and one (or even a few) boxes from a big box subscription service isn’t going to fix that.
Personally, in my professional opinion, those subscription shopping boxes you see out there are a quick fix, a band aid to your ‘I have nothing to wear’ issue. Its something new and shiny at your door… it’s easier to keep it than it is return it and its more exciting to wear something new than something you already have even if its actually not better. I’ve heard it all before from some of my clients. I’ve also heard that when you like one thing you continue to get similar ones so you end up with the same things over and over, that they receive items they cannot afford or even items they despise.
If you read last week’s blog you know that it is a misconception that you could afford my services AND still purchase clothing, but maybe I haven’t convinced you. So you say, this service is CHEAP, and I’m getting my own personal stylist, what could go wrong? They’re professionals, they MUST know what to send me, right?
But ARE THEY???
Let me clarify, I’m not so much questioning if the stylists are professionals, I’m questioning that they’re people… actual living, breathing humans. When you start with the service, sure you get a stylist, but what they don’t tell you is that a lot of what you receive is based on an algorithm. That dreaded thing that controls what you see in your FB and IG feed also controls the clothes that show up at your door. That to me, just feels wrong. As a consumer, I would feel cheated to know that an algorithm was selecting my clothes and the only role the stylist had in it was handwriting the note that came in the box.
In a recent article, the Stitch Fix CEO Elizabeth Spaulding states,
“Stylists play a very active role in training our machine learning models with our data science team for outfits, which our ability to generate algorithmic outfits in a feed we think, a real source of differentiation that requires that human touch to help build and train those models”
This is a prime example of computers taking over jobs that still need a personal touch! Per the article, the stylists who spoke to BuzzFeed said,
They noticed more customer orders being sent out with items chosen completely by an algorithm, with a human stylist involved only to write a note to the customer or if a customer complained.
