Summer Sweat(ers)
Hellooo ladies! It seems crazy to be writing a blog about summer this late into it, but I promise this one will be worth the read… but then again, aren’t all my blogs worth it???
So if you follow me on Instagram you know that I just posted a picture on my stories of me in a summer sweater which sparked a whole slew of events. I’ll be honest, sometimes what I post is planned, but for the most part it isn’t. I was at the shore for a few days with my parents and Tessa and about to go to dinner wearing a summer sweater and I thought, this is a relevant discussion! Its not uncommon for me to be working with a client, going through her closet when we stumble upon a beat up sweatshirt. I then might hear… ‘Oh, I want to keep that. Its perfect for chilly nights.’ Is she wrong? No. Are there better options? YES!
I love a summer sweater for those chilly summer nights at the beach or out to a sunset dinner, BUT I also love them to transition into Fall! Its important that I get multiple uses out of my clothes. Quite frankly, there are too many things that I want to spend my money on out there to purchase a ‘one use only’ garment and I make sure to teach this to my clients as well.
So what is a summer sweater exactly? It is typically 100% cotton and has a looser weave in order to allow for airflow. I love them styled with shorts, skirts, over a dress, and with booties and jeans in Fall. Here are my tips when it comes to shopping and styling a summer sweater.
Make it versatile. Sure, a summer sweater in a bright coral is beautiful, but you aren’t going to transition that into Fall. If you are looking to get the most bang for your buck, choose a summer sweater in a beige/tan/oatmeal color. I absolutely love this paired with white shorts/jeans but then will also be beautiful styled with distressed denim and your favorite cognac colored booties.
Don’t be afraid to size up. I love an oversized sweater French tucked into a pair of pants with the sleeves pushed up a bit. Oversized has become a big trend and often looks more expensive. Pay attention to how your sweaters fit in the shoulders.
Think of 3 ways you can wear it. Can you wear it with your shorts now, jeans later and maybe with a skirt or a pair of leather pants? Can it be dressed down maybe layered over an oxford for day, but then paired back with stilettos for a night out? Thinking of 3 ways you can wear an item will ensure it will earn its place in your closet.
