Why Your Amazon Outfits Look Like Sh*t
Have you fallen victim to Amazon fashion? You need something new for an event in 48 hours so you turn to Amazon. Or maybe its one of those late nights where you’re trolling your Instagram feed and one of those Amazon/Walmart/Target fashion bloggers pops up wearing the most amazing dress. So you hit add to cart, checkout and go about your day on a little retail high. You’re giddy because you scored the holy grail of garments for under $30.
But here’s what happens next. That package arrives, you try it on and you’re left mystified! This can’t possibly be the same item! Why did it look so cute on the model/blogger??? Its like the retail gods sucker punched you in the gut and now you have to figure out how to send this thing back.
I’ll be honest with you. I love a deal. I love a steal. I love Amazon and Target (I don’t need Walmart in my life, sorry not sorry). But what kills me is first the environmental impact. This new ‘fast fashion’ trend is terrible for the environment as landfills pile up. But second, all these low quality cheap clothes are setting consumers up for failure. Shopping online is hard enough, but now you have to wonder if the item you ordered is going to stand up to your expectations when it arrives.
So you’re mystified… how do bloggers style these cheap garments, make them look expensive and custom tailored, while you’re here in what looks like last season’s rejects. Here is why your Amazon outfits look like shi*t and my tips to help:
To make inexpensive clothes look like a million bucks, you need to pair it with something that IS expensive. The art of high low style is just that, an art. When mastered, you can make an Amazon bodysuit look like you bought it from Bloomingdales. If you’ve noticed, bloggers always pair their inexpensive stuff with their designer goods. This doesn’t mean you have to pay full price, there are plenty of ways to get designer goods for less.
Be SUPER critical of your purchases. If its not amazing, DO NOT KEEP IT. Do I need to repeat that? DO NOT KEEP IT! There will be another bodysuit, another sweater, another dress… you don’t need something in your closet that is sub par, scratchy or cheaply made.
Pay attention to seams, ESPECIALLY when its a print. I can spot an Amazon dress from a mile away because typically its a floral dress with a seam up the front and the flowers don’t line up.
Does it work?? I’m referring to buttons, pockets and zippers. Fake buttons and zippers or mini pockets that can’t hold anything are tell tale signs of an inexpensive garment… avoid these like the plague! Honestly, like what the F is the point of fake buttons? Fake zippers? Mini pockets? Don’t say they make it interesting. They’re dumb and not fashion.
Buy it in black or another neutral because it will look the most expensive. Solids always look more expensive, and bright colors show fabric flaws more and can be trendy.
Read reviews, look at pictures. Real women will be honest and this is so helpful! Don’t think ‘Oh, maybe it’ll be different when I get it…"‘ NOPE, it won’t.
Check the material composition… especially with shoes and belts. Unless you have personal/morals reasons, these items should be genuine leather. Vegan leather has come a long way, but its still no match for the real thing.
When in doubt, buy things from brands you know. Amazon is great for finding last season shoes from your favorite designer, and even has some great in house brands such as Daily Ritual.
