The Best Jeans For Your Booty
Denim is a closet staple.
It seems like everyone is always on the hunt for the perfect pair, your collection will never be complete, and your relationship is that of a love hate. It's crazy to think that denim was originally designed to be the garment for the working man- tough enough to uphold conditions in fields and coal mines while now you can find a pair adorned with crystals.
Denim was at the top of this Spring's trends and is disrupting the fashion world for my millennial clients! #RIPSKINNYJEANS
When it comes to shopping for new denim, here are my top tips for finding the perfect fit, shopping and styling!
1. Know your denim 'stats'. Before you do anything else, get yourself a measuring tape like this one and figure out your measurements. There are two you need to know: rise and inseam.
Rise, in my personal opinion, this is THE most important figure to know for yourself. If your jeans are hitting you at the right spot on your waist, I think half the battle has been won. The perfect rise is right under the smallest part of your waist, usually somewhere a little above your belly button and below your bra. So how do you figure out what the most ideal rise for you is? Try on your favorite fitted jeans, regardless of style. The ones that sit at the most perfect spot on your waist. Take them off and button and zip them up, then measure (along the front) from the top of the jean (right above the button) to the crotch seam. Don’t have jeans that hit at the right spot? You can do this with a pair of shorts or pants too, just make sure they don’t hang in the crotch. Still don’t have that? With a pair of jeans on, measure from your belly button to the crotch of your pants. If you’d like your pants to fall above or below, add/subtract 0.5-2 inches from that figure based on your desired height. Most rises are between 9-12 inches.
Inseam- This stat is super important to avoid having to tailor or to ensure those ground grazing wide legs will be long enough with heels. The inseam refers to the length of the pant. Measure from the crotch of your pant along the inner seam to the bottom of the pant.
2. Get the length right for the type of jean you are wearing. A cropped jean is great as we come into the summer months. It should fall about an inch or so above the top of your ankle bone. A wide leg jean either should hit at the ground if wearing flats, or just above the ground if wearing heels. Flares in my personal opinion, look best with heels, and these should also fall right above the ground. A skinny jean, while yes is a dated look, should fall without any bunching and should hit about the ankle.
3. Order online and order a few. After you know your stats, ordering online is actually easier as most retailers list that information under the item in the product description. Try different brands. If you’re unsure about size, order multiple sizes. I feel like so many people get burnt out in the course of online shopping because of the ordering, returning and reordering. If you have it already there for you, it makes choosing a lot easier. Choose a day when you’re feeling good about your body and have some time and try them all on. Try them on with your favorite top and different shoes to see the versatility of them. Ask yourself in what situation would I wear these? Envisioning yourself in a new style helps to ease yourself into a new style/silhouette.
4. Mix up the styling your denim! While denim is typically associated with casual functions, I love the juxtaposition of adding a formal piece with your favorite jeans.
