How to Shop Sale Like a Pro
This weeks post is coming directly off the coat tails of last week’s. With all of the crazy end of season sales going on, I wanted to share some of my insider tips on how to most effectively shop a sale rack. When I’m shopping, specifically a sale rack, there are certain things I look for and ultimately, can’t pass up.
When shopping a winter sale, outerwear and boots are always a good idea. Outerwear and boots are items that stay pretty consistent season to season. They’re investment pieces and items that you should be picky about when it comes to quality. A nice pair of real leather boots are going to last you season after season, so getting them at a discount is just an added bonus. This fall, I started the season with 3 brand new pairs of booties that I got at the end of the season last year for a steal. Depending on how late in the season I’ve found an item, I might save it for next year.
Accessories, specifically jewelry. Jewelry for the most part, isn’t seasonal. Unless you’re purchasing earrings with parrots on them, you can pretty much wear the same pieces all year round. Use an end of the season sale to add a few statement pieces to your wardrobe to bring you into next season. Accessories are also the least expensive way to refresh your wardrobe. I just purchased these and these. Both items I can wear each season and can have for years to come.
Items that look like next season. Take this cardigan from White House Black Market, it is part of their end of winter sale, yet it is a creamy blush color with floral print. You could wear it now with black jeans and booties, OR you could save it for spring and wear it with white denim or a grey dress for work. There are so many things that you can find in an end of season sale that can transition you to the next season at a deep discount. Shop with caution though, this is a way to shop smarter, not to just accumulate more clothing.
Basics. By basics I mean denim, dress pants/skirts, t-shirts. Take these jeans or this body suit for example, both are wardrobe staples that you can wear season after season and will seamlessly fit into your existing wardrobe. I just recently purchased a basic white tee for a client, on the clearance rack. A white tee is something that we all need, and need to continually replace as it gets dingy. I currently have a new white tee in my closet sitting with the tags on it, waiting for spring.
Hopefully this post helps you next time you find yourself perusing the sale rack! Stay focused, don’t be swayed by the price tag, and shop smart!
