Winter Rut Remedies
Yes, I’m well aware we’re rolling off a 65+ degree weekend. Yes, its January.
This past weekend was such a dream and so needed after all the formalities of the holidays. It was so great to be outside all day with friends and the kiddos playing corn hole and dodging power wheel trucks, and enjoying some wine :) But lets face it, that wind has been kicking and I know the 30 degree days aren’t gone for good and we still have a few more months until my pool cover is off. So here are some tips on how to get through the winter rut.
Purge. I like to personally do this. I get one of those big reusable shopping bags and tuck it away in a corner of my closet that isn’t in plain sight. As I get dressed each day, if I try to wear something and decide against it, I ask myself how I feel in the garment. If its not amazing, I throw it in the bag. I like to continually edit my closet and rid it of the items that aren’t going to make the cut next winter. What’s the point of storing it all those months if you won’t wear it next year? I just go with my gut on this one and am sure not to overthink it. It’s when you overthink it you end up keeping the item, and almost never actually wear it. Keep the bag out of sight and donate it at the end of the season. Halfway through the next season, start with a fresh bag.
Take advantage of sales. Retailers are trying to purge their inventory to get ready for Resort and Spring. If there is something you have been eyeing or a trend you’ve been wanting to try, now is the time! I also feel that a few fresh pieces can help to excite you when getting dressed, just the bit of push you need to get through these last few winter months. Don’t take this as your cue to go and buy up all the sale, its important to not be swayed by the price tag. Just because something is on sale for $10, doesn’t mean you should buy it. Think as to how you will incorporate the item in your wardrobe and how often you will wear it.
Remix. I’ve said this one before, go into your closet and find items that you haven’t worn this season and push yourself to wear them for your next outing. It is so easy to just continue to grab the same items over and over again, making you feel like you’re on autopilot. Wearing an item you haven’t worn in a while will help your wardrobe to feel new and exciting again! Pinterest can be a very useful tool in this. For example, got a pair of knee high boots collecting dust in your closet? Simply type in ‘knee high boot outfit’ into the search box and go! Scroll through the pictures until one strikes a chord with you and use it as inspiration. Check out last week’s post for my tips on how to create looks inspired by ones we see in the media!
